SEPTEMBER - PRIMITIVO
Ever wondered what Primitivo actually means? It’s not “primitive” - it’s Italian for early ripening.
Primitivo is a bold Italian red grape that makes rich, juicy wines packed with flavours like blackberry, violet, dark chocolate and liquorice, often with a little extra kick of alcohol. Though it first came from Croatia, it found its true home in Puglia, Italy, thriving on the region’s limestone soils.
In the New World, Primitivo thrives in California, where it's known as Zinfandel. Depending on ripeness, flavours can range from ripe forest berries and cherries through to spicier, more savoury notes. Italian styles tend to be drier and earthier, with hints of dried fruit, spice and those rugged tannins we love.
